W Team is tireless in its efforts to stay abreast of current trends in forward-looking retro-thought. We recently had occasion to dis-entomb an article by James Q. Wilson, published in City Journal, and entitled "Why We Don't Marry." Some will recognize Dr. Wilson as the conservative author of the recent controversial book "The Marriage Problem," which argues that the solution to minorities' social problems is to get 'em married quick and permanent, even if it kills 'em -- as it occasionally may.
If Dr. Wilson were a Christmas present you could have him with brandy or re-wrap him and give him to someone else next year.
The City Journal is awash in thinkers of Dr. Wilson's caliber. We cite,
par exemplum, a recent article entitled "The Racial Profiling Myth Debunked: New data show
...there's no credible evidence that racial profiling exists." Where was this kind of hard-hitting, take-no-prisoners journalism when Orval Faubus needed it? One anticipates future exposés:
"Attila the Hun: Bum-Rap, or Liberal Vendetta?"
"Hitler: Can A Man Who Loves Opera Be All Bad?"
But, those enticing prospects aside, we were most intrigued by Dr. Wilson's opening line:
"Everyone knows that the rising proportion of women who bear and raise children out of wedlock has greatly weakened the American family system. This phenomenon, once thought limited to African Americans, now affects whites as well..."
Despite our sworn oath never to read past any sentence beginning with the words "Everyone knows..." we persevered, alarmed by the implication that immorality, long understood to be the exclusive province of black people, appears now to have tentacled its way into the American heartland.
Apparently, the number of white couples sharing blankets without the benefit has skyrocketed.
Well! We might all just as well be living in the Inner City! What next, the Star-Spangled Banner in hip-hop?
The problem seems to be what Wilson terms "the subversion of marriage." He states:
"whereas marriage was once thought to be about a social union, it is now about personal preferences."
We too confess to a certain sneaking nostalgia for the good old days of arranged marriage, when girls knew what was good for them and did what their daddies told them. And we too bemoan the irresponsible actions of selfish minorities who seem to think it's all about
them.
Of course, evil or misguided liberals (there really are no other kinds) will be quick to say that the declining marriage rate is a reflection of societal ills rather than their cause. They will cynically cite the inherent inequities of the marriage contract at all levels of society, or the fact that inner-city family stability is compromised by pervasive social inequalities. And these trouble-makers will then point to the society's deliberate targeting of young minority men for incarceration or fatal warning-shots.
Picky, picky, picky.
But we stand with Dr. Wilson. And we commend the growing numbers of thoughtful administration officials and legislators who are using Dr. Wilson's arguments as a foundation for laws that will coerce inner-city marriage. It is imperative that we enact legislation -- today wouldn't be too soon -- requiring all minority men and women to get married at once. We must insist on a policy of zero-tolerance for singles. Henceforth, our motto must be:
"JUST SAY 'I DO!' "
There. We feel much better. In today's literary nonesuch, "
Security Exchange," the Exalted Executive defends (kind of) his long-time friend (in a way), Direktor for Fatherland Security Tom Ridge, and muses on the benefits of sacrificial lambs.
And in closing, this inspirational guide. If you cast your bread upon the waters, you will surely receive ten times that amount of soggy bread.
